Another Anti-Theft Story

As you already know, MacKeeper's Anti-Theft helped to catch the whole gang of criminals in Netherlands a year ago. Recently we've got another story from a happy Anti-Theft user from Norway! Click "Read More" to read it.

Sports Journalist Øystein Vik in Bergens Tidende (Norway) had just returned from a holiday vacation with his family in Southern Norway when his Mac was stolen. But using a program Vik had installed on his Mac, he got a detailed report that gave him information about the thief and actual webcam images of his face. In less than 3 hours after receiving the anti-theft report generated by the software the man was identified and arrested by the police.

- We had just stepped outside of the airport and was about to load our luggage into the car when it happened. I turned my back for only a second when a thief took the bag with my Mac and disappeared. It was really bad luck, says Vik. In my stolen case there were gloves, a hat, headset and my Macbook.

- First thing I did was to go online from another computer and logged in to my ZeoBIT account to report my Mac as stolen. I have a program called Mackeeper with an anti-theft feature, and when it was turned on all I had to do was wait for the thief to go online. When the program is activated it will use the webcam to take pictures of the next person who logs on the web. In addition to the picture of the the thief, there is the physical address, IP address, and even the name of the wireless network the thief uses.

- He did not go online immediately, so I reported the theft to the police and the insurance company on Monday. Then on Wednesday I checked again to see if there was any activity. And that was it! The thief had logged online three times, and Vik had received five webcam pictures of him from his ZeoBit account. The pictures were clear and the man was very recognizable especially one of the images that was basically a "mug shot". Two hours after I gave the police the MacKeeper Anti-Theft feature reports they sent a patrol to check the IP location, and then I got a call that he was found and arrested at his home on Wednesday afternoon.

- We did not get the exact home address, but the report indicated that the thief was in a certain area. Coincidentally, he was an acquaintance of someone the police were already familiar with, and officials quickly identified him, said police officer Jørgen Hoffmann.The thief turned out to be a man in his 40s from Enebakk municipality in Akershus, Norway. All the stolen belongings in the bag was found at home in various places through out the man's home.

- I get my Mac back. The man claimed that he was not surprised when the police arrived at the door. He said that he knew about the program and thought it may be installed on the computer. He also claimed that he had every intention to give my bag back, but he just didn't have the time. "This MacKeeper sounds like a good program, he treats this computer very special and this software is proof of that" said police officer Jørgen Hoffmann. The thief acknowledged the fact that he was caught with the stolen Mac, but denies guilt because he said he would have given it back. The case was sent back to the local sheriff's office and It will probably end in court, said a police officer by phone. Journalist Øystein Vik is excited to get back his computer. It seems that the police thought it was allot of fun to solve the case in this way and the webcam images, and IP addresses were priceless clues. "My Mac is the first stolen item I have ever had taken, it's funny that it will be returned so fast with the help of such a great computer program, thanks to MacKeeper" says Vik.

Yesterday the Apple community suffered a great loss – Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and ex-CEO, passed away from a severe form of cancer. We will always remember Steve as a legendary figure who tried and made a revolution in the information technology world. Astonishing results of his hard work will inspire us for new deeds and achievements. The advent of Apple changed many people’s lives, so the world will surely miss Steve. Rest in Peace.

To honor Steve’s memory we’d like to post a video with his famous and somewhat prophetic speech which he held for Stanford University students in 2005.

FINALLY - MacKeeper Version 1.8!

I'm happy to inform you that finally we've released MacKeeper 1.8 with 10 new interface languages - Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, French, Polish, Turkish, and Russian. All of these versions were beta tested, but if we missed something and you still see language mistakes, don't hesitate to report them to us! Meanwhile, another bunch of languages is already being processed and includes German, Italian, Finnish, Czech, Japanese, Korean and Chinese! MacKeeper Localization: Almost There!

It's been a long time since I've been blogging here, as there's a tremendous amount of work on MacKeeper localization... but we are almost done with the first bunch of languages! First of all, those who applied as beta testers and didn't receive any answers, please accept our apologies. We've got a huge amount of applications for beta testing, so it was very difficult to process all of them. Nevertheless, thank you for applying and offering your help - we appreciate it! It's been a long time... Actually we've got a lot of work to do (as usual =)). At the moment we are working on MacKeeper localization, namely having the app's interface translated into different languages. I hope that very soon MacKeeper fans whose native language is not English will enjoy the app in their native languages. By the way, beta testers are always welcome, as we want to make the quality of the translated versions as high as possible!

MacKeeper's Anti-Theft Helps Catch Criminals!

Recently we've got a letter of gratitude from a jazz musician named Gerald Cleaver. His Mac had been stolen during the Europe tour but Anti-Theft helped get it back. Moreover, Anti-Theft's reports helped the local police track down a whole gang of thieves operating in trains in Netherlands. It was great news for us, and we are excited and impressed! Dear Gerald, we are happy that MacKeeper helped you in such an emergency situation, and hope that its other features would help you as well!

Gerald's Story

"This is a letter of gratitude to Mackeeper. My name is Gerald Cleaver and I am a jazz musician. I travel to Europe two or three times a month. Despite all of my travel experience, my and my colleague's computer bags were stolen from an Amsterdam airport train en route to Utrecht, Holland.

The thieves were very professional, at least 4 operating. My fellow bandmate and I arrived in Amsterdam Schipol airport from New York early morning, April 6. We then boarded a train to Utrecht (the city of our first of 2 weeks of concerts all over Europe). At the stop before ours, A person dropped some coins near my and my colleagues feet. While our attention was diverted, both of our computer bags were taken. As soon as we realized it, we told train personnel and the train was searched. But they were long gone.

We arrived in Utrecht, made a police report and then I remembered that I had Mackeeper. I got online with my iPhone. Fortunately I had it in my pocket (my colleague's Blackberry was in his computer bag). I navigated to the mackeeper.com site and turned on "My computer's been stolen!" and hoped for the best.

All during the day when I could, I got online to check the mackeeper site. Nothing registered during the day and I feared the computer may have been magnetically wiped. I got online around midnight before bed to check if there was any activity and there was! Someone had logged in. I had all of the technical info and a snapshot. I immediately called the Netherlands police and emailed them the info. in the next day the mackeeper anti-theft program logged 4 more times. I sent the police everything and they acted on the info, tracked it to the address and arrested 2 people!

This all happened within 48 hours of me turning on "My computer's been stolen!". As I said earlier, I had just begun a two-week concert tour; a different city and/or country almost every day. There is no way I would have ever been able to do anything about this theft if it wasn't for Mackeeper. The Netherlands Police were very impressed with Mackeeper's anti-theft program.

Fortunately for me, our tour ended in Amsterdam (Sunday, April 17). By that time, the detectives and the digital researchers finished their investigation and preparation of irrefutable information for the prosecutor against the seller and buyer of my stolen computer. The information from Mackeeper has helped greatly in a wider investigation on the theft rings that work Holland's trains. I was able take my computer home with me (Monday, April 18).

I can't thank you enough for this outstanding program. Unfortunately, my colleague didn't have Mackeeper; his computer has yet to be recovered. He lost everything. I lost everything but the computer, from which I write right now. I'm so grateful to have it back! Many, many thanks to you all.
